What happens after you send the form or call

Your request goes to one independent local company, which quotes the job. Your agreement for the job is with that company, not with Colorado Springs Landscaping Pros.

  1. You send the form or leave a message. Give your name, phone number, ZIP code and the job you need, such as "new backyard lawn and a sprinkler fix" or "turf for a dog run."
  2. We call you back within one business day. We explain that Colorado Springs Landscaping Pros is a referral service and ask if we may pass your request on.
  3. We pass it to one independent local company. That company calls you, quotes the job and, if you hire it, does the work.

Service area: Colorado Springs and nearby towns

Send the form or call about a yard in Colorado Springs, including the neighborhoods around it, or in Fountain, Monument, Woodland Park or Manitou Springs.

The town matters for permits. The Pikes Peak Regional Building Department (PPRBD) issues building permits for Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Fountain, Woodland Park and Manitou Springs, and also serves Monument (PPRBD). Give your town or ZIP code in the form or when you call so the right local office and rules apply.

On the callback we ask which area your yard is in before we pass your request on.

What to have ready when you send the form or call, by service

You can send the form or call with nothing but your area and a rough idea. A few details let a company quote faster and more closely.

Landscaping: new beds, lawn, irrigation and hardscape

For a general landscaping job, have these ready:

  • Which part of the yard. Front, back, side strips or all of it, and a rough size. Put it in the details box of the form. A few phone photos taken in daylight, kept ready for the company, help more than a long description.
  • What you want, and what you want to keep. Lawn, plant beds, rock, trees, a patio, a path, or a mix. Name any trees or shrubs you want to keep.
  • Your sprinkler system, if you have one. Say whether it works and whether you want it repaired, changed or replaced.
  • Any wall you want built or rebuilt. PPRBD exempts retaining walls up to 4 feet high, measured from the lower grade to the upper grade, but not when the wall carries the weight of a structure, sits on a slope steeper than 2:1, or holds back certain liquids. The exempt list is on the PPRBD work exempt from permit page. Taller walls need a permit (PPRBD homeowner permits). Tell the company the rough height.
  • Fence plans. PPRBD does not usually require a permit for fences under 7 feet, but a fence 6 feet or taller in Colorado Springs needs zoning approval (PPRBD homeowner permits).

If the job needs digging, Colorado law requires a call to Colorado 811 before the first shovel goes in. Ask the company who will place the request, and wait for the utility locate marks (Colorado 811).

Artificial turf: area, pets and your HOA

For artificial turf, have these ready:

  • The area and its use. Backyard lawn, a dog run, a play area, a putting green or a side strip, with a rough length and width.
  • What is there now. Existing lawn, bare soil, gravel or a slab.
  • Whether dogs will use it every day. Say so in the form details or on the first call.
  • Your HOA papers, if you have an HOA. Since August 7, 2023, Colorado law has barred HOA design guidelines for single-family detached homes from banning artificial turf in the backyard. It does not cover attached homes or condos (SB23-178). Tell the company if yours is a townhome or condo.

Landscape design: your goals and your plan

For landscape design, you are buying a plan before any work starts. Have these ready:

  • How you want to use the yard. Dining, kids, pets, quiet planting, privacy, low water use. Two or three priorities tell a designer more than a style name.
  • A rough sketch or the lot plan. A hand-drawn sketch with the house, the fences and the sun side is enough.
  • Who will build it. Say whether you want the same company to design and build, or only a plan you can hand to others. Ask each company what its design step includes and whether it costs anything.
  • Your HOA front-yard rules. Colorado law requires an HOA for single-family detached homes to offer at least three preapproved water-wise front-yard garden designs (SB23-178). If you have an HOA, ask for those designs and your approval steps.

Hydroseeding: area, ground and watering

For hydroseeding, have these ready:

  • The size and shape of the area. Whole lawn, a bare patch, or a slope. Mention any steep slope you want to hold in place.
  • What the ground is like now. Old lawn, weeds, bare dirt or fill dirt left after building. Ask the company who prepares the soil and whether it is in the price.
  • Your watering plan. CSU offers a free establishment permit that lets you water new grass with overhead sprinklers more than three days a week and in the daytime. Proof of soil preparation is needed for new sod or non-native grass seed, but not for native grass seed or overseeding (CSU establishment permits). Ask who applies for it.

Questions to ask the company on the first call

Whatever the service, these questions help you compare companies fairly:

  • Who pulls permits? A contractor must be licensed and registered with PPRBD, and in good standing, before it can pull a PPRBD permit. A homeowner can pull a permit only for their own primary residence (PPRBD homeowner permits).
  • Who does the digging, concrete or tree work? The City of Colorado Springs lists concrete contractors, excavation and tree service among the business types that need a City business license (City business licensing). That is the City's list, not a state rule. For any such part of your job, ask who holds the license.
  • What does the price include? Soil work, haul-away, permits, irrigation changes and cleanup should each be a yes or a no in writing.
  • When can the work start, and how long will it take? Ask for dates, not "soon."
